Nathan Leopold was an American criminal who, along with his partner Richard Loeb, committed the infamous "thrill killing" of 14-year-old Bobby Franks in 1924. Leopold and Loeb were both wealthy and highly intelligent, and their crime shocked the nation. Leopold was sentenced to life in prison plus 99 years, but was eventually released on parole in 1958. Leopold was born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 19, 1904, to Nathan and Florence Leopold. His father was a wealthy Jewish businessman, and his mother was a homemaker. Leopold was an exceptionally bright child, and he was accepted into the University of Chicago at the age of 15. He graduated with a degree in philosophy in 1924. Leopold was an avid birdwatcher, and he was also an accomplished pianist. He was also a member of the American Civil Liberties Union. In 1924, Leopold and Loeb committed the murder of Bobby Franks. The two were arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Leopold was sentenced to life in prison plus 99 years. He was eventually released on parole in 1958. Leopold spent the remainder of his life working as a hospital orderly and teaching classes in prison reform. He died in 1971 at the age of 66.
