Nick Joaquin was a Filipino writer, historian, and journalist, best known for his short stories and novels in the English language. He was awarded the National Artist of the Philippines title for Literature in 1976, and was conferred the rank and title of National Scientist of the Philippines in 2003. Joaquin was born in Paco, Manila, on May 4, 1917, to Leocadio Y. Joaquin, a lawyer, and Salome Marquez, a teacher. He was the fourth of seven children. He attended Ateneo de Manila University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1934. He then studied law at the University of Santo Tomas, but did not finish the course. Joaquin began writing at an early age, and his first published work was a poem in the Philippine Free Press in 1929. He wrote for the Philippine Herald, the Tribune, and the Sunday Times Magazine, and was editor of the Philippine Graphic magazine from 1950 to 1952. He also wrote for the Manila Chronicle and the Manila Times. Joaquin's works include the novels The Woman Who Had Two Navels (1961), Cave and Shadows (1983), and A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino (1966). He also wrote several plays, including A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino (1966), The Summer Solstice (1973), and The Order of Melchizedek (1977). Joaquin died on April 29, 2004, at the age of 86. He was buried at the Manila North Cemetery.
