Timeline
Nicolas Pascarel’s career has evolved through two major phases. The first phase from 1990 to 1997, he was a freelance photo reporter working for Parisian newspapers such as Libération, Le Monde, L'Humanité, Courrier International and the like. Nicolas has also worked in Cairo, Damascus, Rome, Havana, Naples and completed reportage of the last coal mine in North of France. The second phase from 1997, after Cuban trip, he embraced a more artistic approach, "the Saudade style" like he said. His work from this phase was exhibited not only in France, but around the world. He was referred to as the Robert Frank of his generation of photographers. Nicolas Pascarel speaks 4 languages: French, Italian, English and Spanish. Since the early 1990s, has spent the majority of his time in Naples, Cambodia, Vietnam and Havana. He lived in Havana in 1996 and 1997. Towards the end of 1997 after having lived in Havana, his approach to photography changed, and took on a more personal style; he began a close collaboration with the French Foreign Ministry to teach photography in several Fine Art schools in the world such as the Royal Academy of the Fine Arts School of Phnom Penh in Cambodia, Chiang Rai in Northern Thailand and also Bangkok; as well as Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in Vietnam and the Fine Art school of Havana, Cuba.
In 2016, approaching 50 years old, he closed Fotoasia in order to pursue a new photo story, inspired by Michelangelo Antonioni's critically acclaimed film, The Passenger, he created The Passenger Photography. The concept is to continue the full immersion photo workshops in Asia and Cuba, but to include new destinations with a new spirit and way of Life. In Pascarel’s words “The Passenger Photography encompasses photography, cinema, and atmospheres. It's about certain parts of the world, mine, or those I lived, learned, loved, wanted and suffered. The Passenger Photography is a subtle blend of fact and fiction, intertwined. It is this world that I invite you to read and look to still dream a little, together. The Passenger is a self portrait of every element that has made my life, that of yesterday and today, sprinkled with mystery, vitality, unanswered questions to distant adventures, Saudade, and love; above all, Love. The Passenger is an unfinished romance, as the life of a man who is still in search of what he seeks, disregarding the passing of time”. To make this happen, Nicolas Pascarel wrote his first novel on May 2017 "Un dimanche entre l'hiver et le printemps, 8 heures du matin et tout bascule." (A Sunday between winter and spring, 8 am and everything rocked.")
In 2006 he created Fotoasia, which had two missions: providing full- immersion photography tours and curating photographic exhibitions. Under Fotoasia, Nicolas conducted photography workshops for over 10 years.
His works speak about past memories, lost places and Saudade. His work was exhibited in more than 45 galleries across France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, United States, Cuba, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and China. He also created a documentary about Cambodia called “Durant la Pluie” (During the rain) in 2004.
Nicolas Pascarel is a French Photographer, born in Paris, France in 1966. He has worked as a Photographer for over 27 years. He lives in Naples, Italy since 1998.
At the beginning of the 21st century, he collaborated often with Cambodian NGOs, taking care of street children in Phnom Penh (Krousar Thmey, Friends, Handicap International).
