Nigusse Bekele is an Ethiopian middle-distance runner who was born on 9 November, 1959. He is best known for his gold medal performance in the 800m at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He also won a silver medal in the 1500m at the same Olympics. Bekele began his career as a runner in the late 1970s, competing in local and regional races. He quickly rose to prominence in the Ethiopian running scene, winning the 800m at the 1979 All-Africa Games and the 800m and 1500m at the 1982 African Championships. Bekele's greatest success came at the 1984 Summer Olympics, where he won gold in the 800m and silver in the 1500m. He also won gold in the 800m at the 1985 World Cup and silver in the 800m at the 1987 World Championships. Bekele retired from competitive running in the late 1980s and has since become a coach and mentor to many of Ethiopia's top runners. He is currently the head coach of the Ethiopian national team.
