Nikola Tanhofer was a Croatian film director, screenwriter, and producer. He was born in Sesvete, Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (now Croatia) on 25 December 1926. He studied film directing at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb and graduated in 1952. Tanhofer directed over 20 feature films, including the critically acclaimed The Battle of Neretva (1969), which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He also directed the popular comedy series The Three Palms (1966-1970). Tanhofer was a member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts and was awarded the Order of Danica Hrvatska with the image of Marko Marulić in 1998. He died in Zagreb on 15 April 2008 at the age of 81.

His most accomplished film, H-8 (1958), won him a Golden Arena award at the Pula Film Festival. After two less successful films, the psychological war drama Osma vrata (1959) and Sreća dolazi u 9 (1961), the first Yugoslavian feature film with fantastical elements, he directed two somewhat more successful ones, Dvostruki obruč (1963) and Svanuće (1964). After directing Bablje ljeto (1970), he devoted himself to teaching at the Department for Film and Television Cinematography, which he founded in 1969 at the former Academy For Theater, Film And Television in Zagreb. He wrote Filmska fotografija (Film Photography) in 1981.
