Nise da Silveira was a Brazilian psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and writer. She was a pioneer in the field of mental health in Brazil, and is best known for her work in the treatment of schizophrenia. She was the founder of the Mental Health Movement in Brazil, and was the first woman to be appointed as a professor of psychiatry in the country. Nise da Silveira was born in Maceió, Alagoas, Brazil, on 15 February 1906. She studied medicine at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, graduating in 1932. She then went on to specialize in psychiatry, and in 1945 she was appointed as a professor of psychiatry at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. In the 1950s, Nise da Silveira began to challenge the prevailing psychiatric practices of the time, which relied heavily on the use of electroconvulsive therapy and psychotropic drugs. She argued that these treatments were not only ineffective, but also damaging to the mental health of patients. Instead, she advocated for a more humane approach to mental health care, which focused on understanding the patient's individual needs and providing them with a supportive environment. Nise da Silveira's work was instrumental in the development of the Mental Health Movement in Brazil, which sought to improve the quality of mental health care in the country. She was also a prolific writer, publishing numerous books and articles on mental health and psychiatry. She died in 1999, at the age of 93.
