Norma McCorvey is best known for her involvement in the landmark 1973 Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in the United States. She was the plaintiff in the case, known as "Jane Roe." McCorvey was born in Simmesport, Louisiana, and raised in Houston, Texas. She dropped out of school in the ninth grade and had a troubled childhood. She was married three times and had a daughter, Melissa, in 1970. In 1969, McCorvey became pregnant for the third time and sought an abortion, which was illegal in Texas at the time. She was referred to attorneys Sarah Weddington and Linda Coffee, who were looking for a plaintiff to challenge the Texas abortion law. McCorvey agreed to be the plaintiff in the case, which was filed in 1970. The case eventually made its way to the Supreme Court, which ruled in 1973 that the Texas law was unconstitutional. The ruling effectively legalized abortion in the United States. McCorvey later became an advocate for abortion rights, but in 1995 she changed her stance and became an anti-abortion activist. She was baptized in an evangelical church in 1998 and became a Roman Catholic in 1998. McCorvey has written two books about her life, I Am Roe: My Life, Roe v. Wade, and Freedom of Choice (1994) and Won by Love (1998). She has also appeared in several documentaries about the Roe v. Wade case.
