Obed Bapela is a South African politician who was born in 1958. He is currently the Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. He is a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and has served in various capacities in the party since the early 1990s. Bapela holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of the North and a Master of Arts degree from the University of the Witwatersrand. He has also completed a number of courses in public administration and management. Bapela has served as a Member of Parliament since 1994 and has held various positions in the ANC, including as a member of the National Executive Committee and as the Deputy Secretary General of the ANC. He has also served as the Deputy Minister of Public Service and Administration, the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, and the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry. Bapela is married to Thandi Bapela and they have two children. He is an avid reader and enjoys playing golf.
