O'Kelley Whitaker was an American jazz saxophonist and clarinetist. He was born in Durham, North Carolina, and began playing music at an early age. He attended North Carolina Central University, where he studied music and played in the school's jazz band. After college, he moved to New York City and began playing with some of the top jazz musicians of the time, including Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and Charlie Parker. Whitaker was a prolific recording artist, appearing on over 50 albums throughout his career. He was also a sought-after session musician, appearing on recordings by artists such as Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, and Miles Davis. He was a member of the Duke Ellington Orchestra from 1965 to 1967, and he also toured with the Count Basie Orchestra. Whitaker passed away in 2014 at the age of 87. He was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame in 2017.
