Otto Schily is a German politician and lawyer who served as the Federal Minister of the Interior from 1998 to 2005. He was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). Schily was born in Bochum, Germany, on 20 July 1932. He studied law at the University of Bonn and the Free University of Berlin, and was awarded a doctorate in law in 1962. Schily began his political career in the SPD in the 1960s, and was elected to the Bundestag in 1972. He served as the SPD's chairman from 1983 to 1985. In 1998, he was appointed Federal Minister of the Interior, a post he held until 2005. Schily has also been active in the field of human rights, and was a member of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Executive Committee from 1997 to 2005. He is currently a member of the Advisory Council of the German Institute for Human Rights. Schily is married and has two children.
