Owen Land was born in 1944 in New Haven, Connecticut. He attended the University of Connecticut, where he studied art and film. After graduating, he moved to New York City and began making experimental films. His first film, Film in Which There Appear Edge Lettering, Sprocket Holes, Dirt Particles, Etc., was released in 1966. Throughout his career, Owen Land has made over 30 films, including The Film That Rises to the Surface of Clarified Butter (1970), Remedial Reading Comprehension (1971), and The Great God Pan Is Dead (1973). He has also written and directed several short films, including The Secret Life of the Red Fox (1975) and The Man Who Could Not See Far Enough (1976). In addition to his filmmaking, Owen Land has also worked as a photographer, painter, and sculptor. His photographs have been exhibited in galleries and museums around the world, and his sculptures have been featured in public spaces. Owen Land has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the American Film Institute's Maya Deren Award for Independent Film and Video Artists in 2002. He currently lives and works in New York City.
