He is a member of the Indian National Congress and has held various positions in the party. He was the Minister of Education in the Government of Kerala from 1967 to 1969 and the Minister of Industries from 1969 to 1970. He was also the Minister of Home Affairs from 1970 to 1971. He has also served as the Chairman of the Kerala State Planning Board from 1971 to 1977 and the Chairman of the Kerala State Electricity Board from 1977 to 1980. He was the Member of the Legislative Assembly from 1980 to 1982 and the Member of the Legislative Council from 1982 to 1988. He is married to Saraswathi Viswambharan and has two children. He is a philanthropist and has been involved in various social activities. He is also a patron of the Viswambharan Foundation, which works for the upliftment of the poor and the underprivileged.
