Pamela Harriman was an English-born American socialite, diplomat, and political fundraiser. She was born to a wealthy family and was educated at the prestigious finishing school, Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut. She married three times, first to Randolph Churchill, son of Winston Churchill, then to Averell Harriman, and finally to W. Averell Harriman. Harriman was a prominent figure in Washington, D.C. social circles and was known for her philanthropy and political fundraising. She was appointed U.S. Ambassador to France by President Bill Clinton in 1993, becoming the first woman to hold the post. Harriman was a successful businesswoman and philanthropist. She was the founder of the Pamela Harriman Foundation, which provided grants to organizations that promoted the arts, education, and health. She was also a major donor to the Democratic Party and was a close friend of President Clinton. Harriman died in 1997 at the age of 76. She was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Clinton in 1998.
