She attended the University of Miami, where she earned a degree in English. After college, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in writing. Resnick's first major success was the screenplay for 9 to 5, which she co-wrote with Colin Higgins. The film was a critical and commercial success, and earned Resnick an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. She followed this success with the screenplay for The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, which was also a critical and commercial success. Resnick has since written for a number of television shows, including The Golden Girls, Murphy Brown, and Designing Women.
