Paul Chihara is an American composer and music professor. He is best known for his work in film and television, having composed the scores for over 50 films and television series. He has also composed numerous concert works, including operas, ballets, and symphonic works. Chihara was born in Seattle, Washington, and studied at the University of Washington, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1960. He then went on to study at the Juilliard School, where he earned a Master of Music degree in 1962. Chihara has composed music for a variety of films and television series, including The Karate Kid, The Last Emperor, The Joy Luck Club, and The West Wing. He has also composed music for the stage, including the operas The Silver River and The Tempest. Chihara has been a professor of music at the University of California, Los Angeles since 1975. He has also served as a visiting professor at the University of Washington, the University of Michigan, and the University of California, Santa Barbara. Chihara has received numerous awards and honors, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award, and the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship. He was also awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2006.
