Paul-Émile Victor was a French explorer, ethnologist, and filmmaker. He was born in Geneva, Switzerland, to a French father and a Swiss mother. He studied at the École des Hautes Études Commerciales in Paris and at the École des Sciences Politiques. Victor was an explorer and ethnologist who conducted numerous expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic regions. He was the first to cross the Northwest Passage by air in 1948, and he also led the first French expedition to Antarctica in 1949. He wrote several books about his travels, including “The White World” and “The Land of the White Bear”. Victor was also a filmmaker, and he directed several documentaries about his expeditions. He was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1951 and the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit in 1957. Paul-Émile Victor died on 11 April 1995 in Paris, France. He was 87 years old.
