Per Aabel was a Norwegian actor, director, and writer. He was born on 25 April 1902 in Kristiania, Norway (now Oslo, Norway). He began his career as an actor in the 1920s, and went on to become one of Norway's most beloved and respected actors. He was also a prolific director and writer, and was awarded the King's Medal of Merit in gold in 1965. Aabel was known for his versatility, and he appeared in a wide variety of roles, from Shakespearean tragedies to slapstick comedies. He was also a popular television actor, appearing in several series and miniseries. He was also a successful director, and directed several films, including the classic Norwegian comedy "The Olsen Gang". Aabel was married twice, first to actress and singer Ingerid Vardund, and then to actress and singer Liv Ullmann. He had two children, a son and a daughter. Aabel died on 28 April, 1999, at the age of 97. He was buried in the Vestre gravlund cemetery in Oslo.
