Cappelli was born on September 7, 1956 in New York City. He received his bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard University in 1978 and his Ph.D. in industrial relations from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983. Cappelli has held several positions in academia, including professor of management at the University of California, Los Angeles, and professor of management at the University of Southern California. He was a member of WEF's Global Agenda Council on Employment, and a senior advisor for employment policy to the Kingdom of Bahrain between 2003 and 2005.
