Peter Doggett is a British music journalist, author, and magazine editor. He was born on 30 June 1957 in London, England. He is best known for his work on the music magazine New Musical Express (NME) and for his books on the history of popular music. Doggett began his career in journalism in the late 1970s, writing for the NME and other music magazines. He was the editor of NME from 1986 to 1988, and then went on to become the editor of the music magazine Q from 1988 to 1991. Doggett has written several books on the history of popular music, including Electric Shock: From the Gramophone to the iPhone (2013), There's a Riot Going On: Revolutionaries, Rock Stars and the Rise and Fall of '60s Counter-Culture (2008), and The Man Who Sold the World: David Bowie and the 1970s (2013). Doggett is currently a freelance writer and editor, and has written for publications such as The Guardian, The Observer, and The Times. In 2003, he was part of a team of specialist writers and critics – along with Mark Lewisohn, Ian MacDonald, John Harris, David Fricke, Miles and others – who authored the three-part Mojo: Special Limited Edition series on the Beatles.

Among Doggett's other titles, Are You Ready for the Country (2000) documents the advent of the country rock genre. His book on rock music's role in 1960s countercultural ideology, There's a Riot Going On, was published by Canongate in 2007 and was voted "Best Book of the Year" by Mojo' s readers.
