Peter Hirsch is a German-born American physicist and professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. He is best known for his work in the field of nuclear physics, particularly his contributions to the development of the atomic bomb. Hirsch was born in Berlin, Germany, on 16 January 1925. He received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Berlin in 1950. After completing his studies, he worked at the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Berlin. In 1954, he moved to the United States and joined the faculty at the University of California, Berkeley, where he remained until his retirement in 1991. At Berkeley, Hirsch worked on the development of the atomic bomb, and was part of the team that developed the first hydrogen bomb. He also worked on the development of the neutron bomb, and was a member of the team that developed the first nuclear reactor. Hirsch has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the National Medal of Science, the Enrico Fermi Award, and the Wolf Prize in Physics. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. As of 2021, Peter Hirsch is 98 years old.
