Peter Thompson is an Australian former professional soccer player who played for the Australian national team and several clubs in Australia and England. He was born on 1952 in Sydney, Australia. Thompson began his career with the Sydney Olympic in 1971 and went on to play for the Sydney Croatia, Marconi Fairfield, and Sydney City. He then moved to England in 1976 to play for Bolton Wanderers, where he made over 200 appearances. He also had a brief spell with Manchester City before returning to Australia in 1983 to play for Sydney Olympic. Thompson made his international debut for Australia in 1975 and went on to make a total of 33 appearances for the national team. He was part of the Australian squad that competed in the 1974 FIFA World Cup in West Germany. As of 2021, Peter Thompson's net worth is estimated to be around $2 million. Thompson was appointed a fellow of the Australia and New Zealand School of Government in 2007 and teaches executive programs in public policy with a focus on communication concepts. His interests include political and social change, risk communication and behavioural change. He became an adjunct professor at Macquarie University's Department of International Communication in 2006.

Thompson was the presenter of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's Talking Heads, a weekly biographical television program about the lives of prominent Australians, which began on ABC1 in 2005 and ended in 2010 after 238 episodes.

Thompson presented 702 ABC radio's Drivetime in 1987 and then the ABC morning current affairs program AM from 1988 to 1993.
