Kurbjuweit began her gymnastics career at the age of nine, and by the age of 15 she was competing in international competitions. She was part of the German team that won the bronze medal in the team competition at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. She also competed in the individual all-around and the floor exercise, but did not medal. Kurbjuweit retired from competitive gymnastics in 1977 and went on to become a coach.
