Phyllis Barry was an English actress and singer who had a long career in the entertainment industry. She was born in London, England, on 7 December 1908. She began her career as a child actress in the 1920s, appearing in films such as The Lodger (1927) and The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934). She also had a successful career as a singer, performing in musicals such as The Boy Friend (1954) and The Sound of Music (1959). Barry was married to actor and director John Barrymore from 1932 to 1940. She later married actor and director Robert Montgomery in 1945. She had two children with Montgomery, and the couple remained married until his death in 1981. Barry continued to act until the late 1970s, appearing in films such as The Great Gatsby (1974) and The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976). She also appeared in television shows such as The Love Boat (1977) and Fantasy Island (1978). Barry died on 28 April, 2001 in Los Angeles, California, USA, at the age of 92. Her last film role was playing a waitress in the 1947 drama Love From A Stranger. Phyllis quit acting and tried to settle into life as a housewife. Unfortunately she became increasingly addicted to prescription drugs.

1939

Phyllis continued to make movies but by 1939 her career had stalled. She appeared in The Three Stooges short Three Little Sew and Sews and had a bit part in the drama Waterloo Bridge.

On August 20, 1939 she married decorator Gilbert M. Caldwell. The couple moved to a small house in West Hollywood.

1936

She divorced him in 1936 and said "he told me he didn't think my career meant anything".

1932

She married vaudeville performer Albert Nordlund (also known as Al Nord) in 1932. The following year she landed the lead role in the comedy What - No Beer? opposite Buster Keaton. She had supporting roles in the films Blind Adventure and Forbidden Heaven. Phyllis and Albert had a rocky marriage and they separated several times.

1930

In 1930 she toured America in a production of Rio Rita. Producer Samuel Goldwyn saw her on stage and offered her a part in the drama Cynara starring Kay Francis. Unfortunately the movie flopped and her performance got mixed reviews.

1925

She made her film debut in the 1925 Australian film Painted Daughters. At the time her stage name was Phyllis DuBarry.

1923

Brunette English actress and dancer. On stage from 1923, she was initially billed as Phyllis Du Barry, while performing in Australian cabaret. She eventually joined the Jim Gerald Revue Company and, in 1930, moved to the U.S. as a dancer with Fanchon and Marco. She made her way to Hollywood and was given a co-starring role as 'the other woman' opposite Ronald Colman in Cynara (1932). The picture flopped, regarded as 'too gloomy' and Phyllis as 'too genteel'. After that, Phyllis was relegated to comic support for Buster Keaton and Wheeler & Woolsey, her roles continuing to diminish until her untimely death from an overdose of barbiturates.
