Pierre Berton was a Canadian author and journalist who wrote about Canadian history, particularly the history of the Canadian West and the Yukon. He was born in Paris, France, on March 6, 1920, and moved to Canada with his family when he was two years old. He grew up in Toronto and attended the University of Toronto, where he studied English literature. Berton began his career as a journalist, working for the Toronto Star and then the Vancouver Sun. He wrote several books about Canadian history, including The Mysterious North, The National Dream, and The Last Spike. He also wrote a number of books about the Yukon, including Klondike and The Klondike Quest. Berton was awarded the Order of Canada in 1967 and was made a Companion of the Order of Canada in 1995. He died in 2004 at the age of 84.
