Pierre Fournier was a French cellist and one of the most renowned classical musicians of the 20th century. He was born on 24 June 1906 in Paris, France. He began studying the cello at the age of five and made his debut at the age of twelve. He went on to study at the Paris Conservatoire, where he won first prize in cello in 1924. Fournier was known for his lyrical playing style and his ability to bring out the beauty of the music. He was also known for his technical mastery and his ability to play with great speed and accuracy. He was a member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra from 1929 to 1933 and was a professor at the Paris Conservatoire from 1933 to 1945. Fournier was a prolific recording artist, making over 200 recordings of works by composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy, and Schubert. He also made recordings of works by contemporary composers such as Bartok, Hindemith, and Prokofiev. Fournier was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque in 1954 and was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1955. He died on 10 January 1986 in Geneva, Switzerland.
