Premankur Atorthy was an Indian film director, writer, and actor. He was born on 1 January 1890 in Faridpur District, Bengal Presidency, British India. He was one of the pioneers of Indian cinema, and is credited with making the first Bengali feature film, Billwamangal, in 1919. Atorthy began his career as a stage actor in the early 1900s, and later moved to Calcutta to pursue a career in the film industry. He wrote and directed several films, including Billwamangal, which was released in 1919. He also acted in several films, including the first Bengali talkie, Jamai Shashthi, in 1931. Atorthy was a prolific writer, and wrote several books, including a biography of Rabindranath Tagore. He was also a noted social reformer, and was involved in several social and political movements. Atorthy passed away in Calcutta on 15 April, 1945. He was 55 years old at the time of his death.
