He also won a bronze medal in the 20 km walk at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland. Thunestvedt was born in Oslo, Norway. He began his career as a racewalker in 1948, and went on to win several national championships. He competed in the 1952 and 1956 Summer Olympics, and won a gold medal in the 50 km walk at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia. Thunestvedt retired from competitive racewalking in 1960, and went on to become a coach and mentor to many young racewalkers. He was inducted into the Norwegian Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.
