He then attended the University of North Carolina School of Law and graduated with a law degree in 1951. Yelton was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives from 1969 to 1974. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He was also a member of the North Carolina Senate from 1975 to 1978. Yelton was a member of the North Carolina Supreme Court from 1979 to 1984.
