Randy Owen is an American country music singer and songwriter. He is best known as the lead singer of the country music band Alabama, which he co-founded in 1969. He has released several solo albums, including his debut album, One on One, in 1982. He has also written and produced several songs for other artists, including "Love in the First Degree" for Alabama and "The Closer You Get" for the group Exile. Owen was born in Fort Payne, Alabama, and grew up in the small town of Centre, Alabama. He began playing guitar at the age of eight and formed his first band, The Tones, at the age of fourteen. He attended Jacksonville State University, where he majored in music. In 1969, Owen and his cousin, Teddy Gentry, formed the country music band Alabama. The band released their debut album, Wild Country, in 1972 and went on to become one of the most successful country music acts of all time. They released over twenty studio albums and had over forty number one singles on the Billboard country music charts. Owen has also released several solo albums, including One on One in 1982, and has written and produced several songs for other artists, including "Love in the First Degree" for Alabama and "The Closer You Get" for the group Exile. Owen has been inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame. He has also been honored with numerous awards, including the Academy of Country Music's Pioneer Award in 2003 and the Country Music Association's Career Achievement Award in 2004.
