Rex E. Wallace is an American linguist and professor of Classics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He is a specialist in the Indo-European languages, particularly the ancient Greek and Latin languages. He has written extensively on the history of the Greek language, the history of the Latin language, and the history of the Indo-European languages. Wallace was born in 1952 in the United States. He received his B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975 and his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1981. Wallace has held a number of academic positions, including professor of Classics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, professor of Classics at the University of California, Berkeley, and professor of Classics at the University of Texas at Austin. He has also held visiting positions at the University of Cambridge, the University of Oxford, and the University of Munich. Wallace has written numerous books and articles on the history of the Greek and Latin languages, the history of the Indo-European languages, and the history of linguistics. His books include The History of the Greek Language (1985), The History of the Latin Language (1991), and The Indo-European Languages (1996). Wallace is a member of the American Philological Association, the Society for Classical Studies, and the Linguistic Society of America. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
