Ricardo J. Caballero is a Chilean macroeconomist and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was born on October 20, 1959 in Santiago, Chile. He received his B.A. in Economics from the University of Chile in 1982 and his Ph.D. in Economics from MIT in 1987. Caballero is a leading expert in macroeconomics, international finance, and economic development. He has published extensively in leading academic journals and has served as an advisor to the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the Inter-American Development Bank. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States and a Fellow of the Econometric Society. Caballero is currently the Ford International Professor of Economics at MIT and a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He is also a member of the Council of Economic Advisers of the Chilean government.

In 2002, Caballero was awarded the Econometric Society's Frisch Medal with Eduardo Engel for their paper Explaining Investment Dynamics in U.S. Manufacturing: A Generalized (S, s) Approach. He was awarded the Smith Breeden Prize by the American Finance Association for “Collective Risk Management in a Flight to Quality Episode”, Journal of Finance, 63(5), October 2008 (joint with Arvind Krishnamurthy) and the Journal of Finance 2014 Brattle Group Prize for distinguished papers for “Fire Sales in a Model of Complexity,” joint with Alp Simsek.
