Richard Adler was an American composer, lyricist, and producer. He is best known for his collaborations with composer Jerry Ross on the musicals The Pajama Game and Damn Yankees. Adler was born in New York City on August 3, 1921. He attended the High School of Music and Art and the Juilliard School of Music. Adler began his career as a composer and lyricist in the 1940s, writing for radio and television. He wrote the music for the television show The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, and the theme song for the show, "Ozzie and Harriet". He also wrote the music for the television show The Adventures of Superman. In 1954, Adler and Ross wrote the musical The Pajama Game, which was a huge success. The show ran for 1,063 performances and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The show spawned the hit song "Hey There". In 1955, Adler and Ross wrote the musical Damn Yankees, which was also a huge success. The show ran for 1,019 performances and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The show spawned the hit song "Whatever Lola Wants". Adler and Ross wrote several other musicals together, including New Girl in Town, Ankles Aweigh, and A Joyful Noise. Adler also wrote the music for the musicals The Conquering Hero and Shangri-La. Adler won two Tony Awards for Best Musical, and was nominated for two more. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972. Adler died on June 21, 2012, at the age of 90.
