Richard Bissell was an American novelist and playwright best known for his novel 7½ Cents, which was adapted into the musical The Pajama Game. He was born in Dubuque, Iowa, and attended the University of Iowa, where he wrote for the student newspaper and graduated with a degree in English in 1935. Bissell's first novel, 7½ Cents, was published in 1954 and was adapted into the musical The Pajama Game in 1955. The musical was a success, running for 1,063 performances on Broadway and winning the Tony Award for Best Musical. Bissell wrote several other novels, including The Big Wheel (1955), The Monitors (1959), and The Cat's Pajamas (1962). He also wrote the play Say, Darling (1958), which was adapted into a musical in 1968. Bissell died in 1977 at the age of 64. He was posthumously inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1981.
