Richard Hatfield was a Canadian politician who served as the 25th Premier of New Brunswick from 1970 to 1987. He was born in Woodstock, New Brunswick, and attended the University of New Brunswick, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952. Hatfield was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in 1960, and was re-elected in every subsequent election until his retirement in 1987. He was appointed Minister of Education in 1966, and became Premier in 1970. He was re-elected in 1974, 1978, and 1982. During his tenure as Premier, Hatfield was responsible for a number of initiatives, including the creation of the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission, the establishment of the New Brunswick Community College system, and the introduction of the province's first bilingualism policy. He also oversaw the construction of the Mactaquac Dam, the largest hydroelectric project in Atlantic Canada. Hatfield retired from politics in 1987, and was appointed to the Senate of Canada in 1989. He retired from the Senate in 1996. He died in Woodstock in 2021 at the age of 89.
