Richard Stevens is a British author and computer scientist. He is best known for his books on computer networking and the Internet, including TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1 and TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 2. He was born in 1955 in Plymouth, United Kingdom. Stevens studied at the University of Cambridge, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics in 1977. He then went on to earn a Master of Science degree in computer science from the University of London in 1979. Stevens began his career as a software engineer at Digital Equipment Corporation in the United Kingdom. He then moved to the United States, where he worked for Sun Microsystems and then for the University of California, Berkeley. In 1991, Stevens published his first book, TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 1. The book was an instant success and is still considered a classic in the field of computer networking. He followed this up with TCP/IP Illustrated, Volume 2 in 1994. Stevens has also written several other books on computer networking, including Unix Network Programming, Network Programming with Perl, and Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment. Stevens is currently a professor of computer science at the University of California, Davis. He is also a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery.
