He has written over twenty novels and numerous short stories. He attended the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. After college, he worked as a copywriter for an advertising agency in New York City. He began writing science fiction in the 1950s, and his first novel, The Man Who Loved Mars, was published in 1959. He went on to write several more science fiction novels, including The War of the Worlds, The Andromeda Strain, and The Andromeda Strain II. He also wrote several fantasy novels, including The Sword of Shannara, The Elfstones of Shannara, and The Wishsong of Shannara. He also wrote horror novels, such as The Dark Tower and The Shining. He has won several awards for his writing, including the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1977 for The Sword of Shannara, and the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1978 for The Shining.
