Richie Hansen is an American musician, songwriter, and producer. He is best known for his work with the band The Cars, for which he was the lead guitarist and co-founder. He has also released several solo albums and collaborated with other artists. Hansen was born in Northport, New York, and grew up in nearby Huntington. He began playing guitar at the age of 12, and by the time he was 15, he was playing in local bands. He attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where he studied music and art. In 1976, Hansen formed The Cars with Ric Ocasek, Benjamin Orr, and Elliot Easton. The band released their self-titled debut album in 1978, and it was an immediate success. The Cars went on to become one of the most successful bands of the 1980s, selling over 25 million albums worldwide. Hansen left The Cars in 1988, and went on to pursue a solo career. He released his debut solo album, "The Best of Richie Hansen", in 1989. He has since released several more solo albums, and has collaborated with other artists, including John Entwistle, Steve Winwood, and Peter Frampton. Hansen is currently 69 years old.
