Riza Sapunxhiu was an Albanian politician and diplomat who served as the Prime Minister of Albania from 1982 to 1991. He was born in Peć, Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, and was educated at the University of Belgrade. Sapunxhiu was a member of the Albanian Communist Party and served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1978 to 1982. He was appointed Prime Minister in 1982 and served until 1991. During his tenure, he was credited with introducing economic reforms and improving relations with the West. Sapunxhiu was a strong advocate of Albanian independence and was instrumental in the country's transition to a multi-party democracy. He was also a key figure in the negotiations for the Albanian-Yugoslav border agreement of 1991. Sapunxhiu died in Tirana, Albania, on April 15, 2008, at the age of 83. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and two daughters.
