Robert Aldrich was born on August 9, 1918 in Cranston, Rhode Island. He was the son of a successful businessman and a homemaker. He attended the University of Virginia and graduated with a degree in English in 1940. Aldrich began his career in the film industry as an assistant director and editor for RKO Pictures. He then moved to Warner Brothers, where he worked as a director and producer. He directed his first feature film, The Big Leaguer, in 1953. Aldrich went on to direct a number of successful films, including Kiss Me Deadly (1955), The Dirty Dozen (1967), and The Longest Yard (1974). He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director for The Flight of the Phoenix (1965). Aldrich was married twice, first to Harriet Foster from 1941 to 1951, and then to actress Martha Hyer from 1954 until his death in 1983. He had two children with Foster and two with Hyer. Aldrich died on December 5, 1983 in Los Angeles, California. He was 65 years old.
