Robert Ardrey was an American playwright, screenwriter, and author. He is best known for his works on human nature and the African origin of humankind. He wrote several books, including African Genesis (1961), The Territorial Imperative (1966), and The Social Contract (1970). Ardrey was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 16, 1908. He attended the University of Chicago, where he studied philosophy and literature. After graduating, he worked as a journalist and playwright in Chicago and New York. In the 1940s, Ardrey began to focus on writing about human nature and the African origin of humankind. His first book, African Genesis, was published in 1961 and was a bestseller. It argued that human behavior is largely determined by our evolutionary past. In 1966, Ardrey published The Territorial Imperative, which argued that humans have an innate need to defend their territory. This book was also a bestseller and was widely read by academics and the general public. In 1970, Ardrey published The Social Contract, which argued that humans have an innate need to cooperate with each other. This book was also a bestseller and was widely read by academics and the general public. Ardrey's books were highly influential and helped to shape the field of evolutionary psychology. He died in 1980 at the age of 71.
