Robert Joseph Ward was an American jazz guitarist, composer, and arranger. He was born in New York City, New York, on January 31, 1926. He began playing guitar at the age of nine and was soon performing with local bands. He attended the Juilliard School of Music and studied with jazz greats such as Charlie Christian, Kenny Burrell, and Tal Farlow. Ward was a member of the Horace Silver Quintet from 1956 to 1959, and he also performed with the likes of Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Sonny Rollins. He released several albums as a leader, including "The Robert Ward Trio" (1958), "The Robert Ward Quartet" (1959), and "The Robert Ward Quintet" (1960). Ward was a prolific composer and arranger, writing for television, film, and theater. He wrote the music for the Broadway musical "The Wiz" (1975) and the score for the film "The Wiz" (1978). He also wrote the music for the television series "The Cosby Show" (1984-1992). Ward was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 2002. He passed away on April 20, 2013, at the age of 87.

Ward was nominated by President Richard Nixon on September 25, 1972, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York vacated by Judge Frederick van Pelt Bryan. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on October 12, 1972, and received commission on October 17, 1972. He assumed senior status on February 1, 1991. His service was terminated on August 5, 2003, due to death.
