He began his career as a cinematographer in the early 1910s, working on films such as The Great Train Robbery (1912) and The Birth of a Nation (1915). He also worked as an actor in films such as The Mark of Zorro (1920) and The Three Musketeers (1921). Totheroh was a pioneer in the field of cinematography, and was one of the first cinematographers to use the technique of backlighting. He was also one of the first to use the technique of double exposure. He was known for his innovative use of lighting and camera angles, and for his ability to capture the beauty of nature on film. Totheroh worked on over 100 films during his career, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on The Mark of Zorro.
