He has composed over 200 works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. He has also written several books on music theory and composition. Yttrehus has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Music, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Award, and the Norwegian-American Music Award. He has also been inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame. Yttrehus is currently 92 years old and has an estimated net worth of $1 million. He is married and has two children.
