Rubén González was born on 26 May, 1919 in Santa Clara, Cuba. He was a Cuban pianist and composer who was a major figure in the development of the Cuban son and the Latin jazz movement. He was a member of the Buena Vista Social Club, and his work has been featured in the documentary of the same name. González began playing piano at the age of seven, and by the age of twelve he was performing professionally. He studied music at the National Conservatory of Music in Havana, and later joined the Orquesta Casino de la Playa, where he played for over twenty years. González's career was interrupted by the Cuban Revolution, and he was forced to work as a taxi driver for several years. In 1996, he was invited to join the Buena Vista Social Club, and his work was featured in the documentary of the same name. González's music has been praised for its unique style, which combines traditional Cuban rhythms with jazz and classical influences. He has released several solo albums, and has collaborated with a number of other musicians, including Ry Cooder, Ibrahim Ferrer, and Omara Portuondo.
