Rudolph J. Bergquist was born in 1885 in Sweden. He was a cinematographer who worked in the early days of the motion picture industry. He was a pioneer in the development of the motion picture camera and was responsible for the invention of the first portable camera. Bergquist began his career in the film industry in the early 1900s, working as a cameraman for the Swedish film company Svenska Biografteatern. He then moved to the United States and worked for the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company. He was responsible for the development of the first portable camera, which allowed filmmakers to shoot on location. Bergquist was also a pioneer in the development of color film. He developed a three-color process that was used in the production of the first color feature film, The Toll of the Sea, in 1922. Bergquist was a prolific cinematographer, working on over 200 films during his career. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his work on the film The Big Parade in 1925. Bergquist died in 1945 at the age of 60. He was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.
