Sammy Kipketer is a Kenyan long-distance runner who has won numerous medals in international competitions. He is the current world record holder in the 3000m steeplechase, having set the record in 2001. He has also won gold medals in the 5000m and 10,000m at the World Championships in Athletics. Kipketer was born in Keiyo District, Kenya, on 29 September 1981. He began his running career in 1997, competing in local races in his home country. He quickly rose to prominence, winning the Kenyan National Championships in the 3000m steeplechase in 1998. Kipketer went on to win gold medals in the 3000m steeplechase at the 2000 and 2004 Olympic Games, as well as the World Championships in Athletics in 2001, 2003, and 2005. He also won gold medals in the 5000m and 10,000m at the World Championships in 2003 and 2005. Kipketer is currently the world record holder in the 3000m steeplechase, having set the record in 2001 with a time of 7:53.63. He is also the African record holder in the 5000m, with a time of 12:49.02. Kipketer is married to fellow Kenyan runner, Vivian Cheruiyot, and they have two children. He is currently sponsored by Nike and is a member of the Nike Oregon Project.
