Zafar went on to found a not-for-profit organization called Brave Beginnings to help abuse victims, and was appointed to the Board of Governors at the University of Toronto in 2016. Her memoir, published in 2019, appeared on the bestseller lists of the Globe and Mail and the CBC.

Zafar was born to a Pakistani family in the United Arab Emirates. She was forced into an arranged marriage at the age of sixteen. She left her family home in UAE, moved to Canada, and immediately became pregnant with her first child. After years of abuse while living with her husband and intermittently his parents, she managed to complete high school and save money from a child care business to attend university. She graduated at the top of her class in 2013, as a mother of two, shortly after leaving her husband.
