Serik Akhmetov is a Kazakh businessman and politician who has served as the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan from April 2014 to September 2016. He was born in Temirtau, Kazakhstan, and graduated from the Kazakh State University in 1981. Akhmetov began his career in the Soviet Union's Ministry of Foreign Trade, and later worked in the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations. In 1991, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Foreign Economic Relations, and in 1994 he became the Minister of Foreign Economic Relations. In 1997, Akhmetov was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, and in 1999 he became the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan. He served in this position until 2002, when he was appointed Chairman of the Board of the National Bank of Kazakhstan. In 2004, Akhmetov was appointed Chairman of the Board of the Samruk-Kazyna Sovereign Wealth Fund, and in 2007 he became the Chairman of the Board of the National Welfare Fund. In April 2014, he was appointed Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, and served in this position until September 2016. Akhmetov is currently the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Eurasian Development Bank, and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Eurasian Economic Commission. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Eurasian Economic Union. As of 2021, Serik Akhmetov's net worth is estimated to be roughly $1.2 billion.
