Seth Low was an American educator, politician, and philanthropist. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, on January 18, 1850, to Abiel Abbot Low and Harriet Low. He attended Columbia College, graduating in 1870. After graduation, he worked in his father's importing business. In 1881, Low was elected mayor of Brooklyn, becoming the first mayor of a major American city to be elected on a reform ticket. He was re-elected in 1883 and served until 1885. During his tenure, he worked to improve the city's infrastructure, including the construction of a new city hall and the expansion of the Brooklyn Bridge. In 1890, Low was elected president of Columbia University, a position he held until 1901. During his tenure, he oversaw the university's move from its original location in midtown Manhattan to its current location in Morningside Heights. He also established the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and the Columbia School of Journalism. Low was also a noted philanthropist, donating large sums of money to various causes, including the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Brooklyn Public Library. He also established the Seth Low Junior College at Columbia University, which later became Barnard College. Low died on September 17, 1916, in Brooklyn, New York. He was 66 years old.
