He was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the fifth round of the 2002 NFL Draft. He played college football at Notre Dame. Walton attended Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego, California, where he was a two-time All-CIF selection and a two-time All-League selection. He was also a two-time All-State selection and a two-time All-American selection. Walton played college football at the University of Notre Dame, where he was a two-time All-American selection and a two-time All-Big East selection. He was also a two-time Academic All-American selection. Walton was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the fifth round of the 2002 NFL Draft. He played for the Rams for three seasons, appearing in 33 games and recording two interceptions. He was released by the Rams in 2005 and signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he played for one season. He was released by the Buccaneers in 2006 and signed with the San Francisco 49ers, where he played for one season. He was released by the 49ers in 2007 and signed with the Arizona Cardinals, where he played for one season. He was released by the Cardinals in 2008 and signed with the Detroit Lions, where he played for one season. He was released by the Lions in 2009 and signed with the Seattle Seahawks, where he played for one season. Walton retired from the NFL in 2010. He currently works as a football analyst for ESPN. He walked on to the Irish football team as a sophomore, and was recognized as a unanimous first-team All-American as a senior in 2002.
